New Council homes make life easier for Sheffield families
Keiley, a mother of three and a wheelchair user, said: “I was living on Manor before, in a house with four floors. So when I started having to use a wheelchair last year it wasn't ideal to say the least. The other house would have been impossible to stay in. It's made such a difference to my everyday life; I can get through the doorways and I can stay in my chair around the house.”
The property, built by the Sheffield Housing Company - a unique partnership between Sheffield City Council, Keepmoat and Great Places, with plans to build 2,300 new homes across Sheffield over the next 15 years - features a number of unique adaptations, including wider corridors and a ground floor level access shower.
The Sheffield Housing Company is building a vareity of two, three and four bedroom homes with the latest home energy saving systems, living-space enhancing designs and future-proofing measures for easy access. The majority of these homes will be for outright sale, however the Cunningham's new home in Parson Cross, on the Brearley Forge development, is one of 30 new properties that Sheffield City Council is buying from the Sheffield Housing Company.
The Council has also recently released plans for a further brand new 45 Council homes, and over the next six years it also plans to add a further 600 homes to the 42,000 Council properties already in the city.
Cllr Harry Harpham, Cabinet Member for Homes and Neighbourhoods said: “It's great to be able to announce that we are buying 75 brand new homes and will be securing hundreds of much-needed, good quality council homes for the people of Sheffield. We intend to deliver the maximum number of new council houses we can under the current borrowing rules.
This will not only provide us with more properties to meet the increased need for affordable houses but also ensure that we have a wider range of properties to meet future changes in demand. This development also provides a boost to the local economy, as jobs will be created and many businesses will benefit.”
Tom Fenton, Project Director with Sheffield Housing Company added: “It is fantastic that Sheffield City Council has chosen to purchase 30 homes from us, which is both an endorsement of the Housing Company partnership and the quality of the product which we are producing.
We wish Keiley and her family every happiness in their new home. Our aim from the outset has always been to build high quality sustainable homes and homes which are accessible for people with mobility problems and adaptable for those who may have special needs in the future.”
